《秋潮向晚天》虽然被称为《橘子红了》的姊妹篇，但其剧情已与《橘子红了》毫无干系。故事描述了清贫出身的庄自立力排重阻娶富家女纯美为妻，并育有一对活泼可爱的双胞胎女儿。为了不让妻女受苦，庄自立勉强接受岳父安排去其集团工作，却因不谙商界中的尔虞我诈，在一次重大交易中令集团蒙受巨大损失，在岳父的质疑和自责的双重打击下精神恍惚，恰逢一场蹊跷大火，令岳父认为庄要与妻女同归于尽，更加深了其拆散他们的决心。自立被以纵火罪和精神错乱之名判入精神病院强治两年。在无尽的愧疚和自责煎熬下，他想重获照顾与爱护她们的机会。但种种的误会与阻力给重圆之路设下无数障碍……。"In 1998, Jean-Luc Godard made a short video entitled Adieu au TNS (Farewell to the TNS).
