生于香港名门望族的宋一夫（任达华）为了建设祖国，甘愿与妻子（米雪）放弃名利在中国当上干部。及后遇上文化大革命，一夫同僚江青风惨遭亲子江书海迫至自杀；一夫夫妇被批斗，并先后死亡。 宋一夫之子宋邦，为人乐观积极，反之江书海因迫死父亲而变得孤避。长大后，海（吴启华）与邦（黄日华）的妹庭（伍咏薇）成为恋人。后海与邦因参与寺无运动被公安追捕而逃至香港。邦在香港认识美丽（戚美珍）和美玲（翁虹）两姐妹，感情路上在两女之间徘徊，事业上凭毅力在波折中取得成功……。故事发生在1897年，Print Ritter 和他的远方侄儿Tom Harte不情愿地成了5个被虐待和抛弃的中国女孩的保护神。Ritter和Harte运送马匹、照料女孩们的同时，还要避开一帮为了私利想要绑架女孩们的仇恶对手……。Tempers flare on deck as the crew hustles to prepare the boat for their first group of charter guests, a larger-than-life group of fun-loving southerners.
